Matthias Flake is pianist and composer. At the core of his work stands the search for new forms of expression - and ways of working – in the crossroads between music and the dramatic arts. During his degree for teaching at the Folkwang University of Arts in Essen, he focussed on classical piano, music pedagogy and music science, as well as fostering a strong interest in composition, improvisation, new- and electronic music. His own music is based on a mastery of classical composing techniques, but his affinity to popular culture and his fondness for the mundane and trivial shines through strongly in his work.
Matthias Flake works as composer, music director and actor in theatre productions on-stage as well as off-stage. His specific interest lies in the development of individual scenic and performative projects and concepts. He also works as orchestral arranger and offers courses, projects and workshops in the context of the music education of actors in Germany and abroad.
